The Honourable Peter Lawlor MP, Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading
will be our guest speaker at the May Women in Tourism Breakfast to be held on Friday 1 May at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.
It is truly an honour to have the Minister as our guest speaker after being appointed with the Tourism and Fair Trading portfolio on 26 March 2009.
Peter Lawlor was elected to State parliament in 2001 as the first Labor member for Southport. He was sworn in as Minister for Tourism and Fair Trading on 30 March 2009.
Background:
Born in Ayr as the eldest of five boys, Peter Lawlor grew up on the Gold Coast and completed high school at Marist Brothers in Ashgrove. He worked and traveled extensively for the next ten years residing in places like Port Moresby and South Africa as an accountant before returning to the Gold Coast. In 1981 he was admitted as a Solicitor and commenced practice as a sole practitioner on the Gold Coast for the next 20 years.
Peter Lawlor went on to become a Gold Coast City Councillor campaigning to preserve the Broadwater and protect the local environment for future generations and continues to do so as the Member for Southport.
New Role:
Having lived on the Gold Coast for most of his life, Peter Lawlor is well aware of the importance tourism is to the region and to Queensland. Queensland's tourism industry is facing very challenging times and as Minister for Tourism he is committed to representing the whole state from Coolangatta to the Cape.
Mr Lawlor's other responsibilities include Fair Trading, Liquor Licensing, Gaming and Racing.
Personal:
Peter Lawlor says his three children, Ali, Jane and Phil are the most important people in his life.
